Basic
Dog Obedience
Owning
a dog, whether for companionship or security purpose, is indeed a very
comforting
feeling. But then, it is not as easy as it might seem at the beginning.
These
creatures are born carefree but wise in a way. Being a responsible dog
owner
need not to just let his pet damage things or become aggressive towards
people
at the wrong place and at the wrong time. Somehow, it becomes a
reflection on
the way the person takes care and responsibility in owning a pet, and
here’s
where basic dog obedience comes in.
First
thing one must consider is to make his dog trained to become obedient
animals.
Techniques and simple instructions are commonly used to simply
understand the
gestures and words, and eventually incorporate into its system the way
a
command must be executed.
Upon
starting the basic dog obedience training, one must be serious and very
patient
enough in teaching the routine. There are various suggestions that are
considered
to further develop an obedient companion so have these things on mind.
It might
not all work in your case, but at least these could become helpful
guides in a
way.
First
part of the training is observation. Being the dog’s master,
know what are the
capabilities and limitations of your pet. Never dare your dog to
execute
something that would just be time consuming and mind-confusing. For
example,
start in merely teaching it how to sit first rather than forcing it to
know
what ‘rolling’ is. It’s as if giving an
extra command will sooner or later
frustrate both of you. Give some respect and time to the behavior and
match the
degree of the trick with its age.
When
a
trick has been followed, always make your pet feel recognized. Reward
or give
him praise for the well-done performance made, so the next time you
give an
order, it could make him associate the reward to his obedience. Like
humans,
positive reactions boost their ‘morale’ and keep
them performing better. On the
other hand, if the dog acts oppositely during the training, do not
punish nor
scold harshly. The negative approach will just make it feel far from
you or it
could lose its connection from you. But then, apply penalty. This is
not
exactly punishing, but giving something that a dog avoids, like tying
up in a
leash and not being able to move around freely. After some time, it
will
realize that it can’t do anything anymore so it has no choice
but behave.
Just
remember that the most important aspect of the training is to
incorporate such
execution with a reward. This is the element that works best on
encouraging basic
dog obedience. A simple word of praise, petting, food or toy giving
will leave
an impression to the dog that what he have done is good and that it
will make
it reap benefits!
